How to shop safely online.

Dont get caught out by hidden charges

Check that the price you think you are paying includes VAT and delivery. Also, some retailers may issue a small charge for paying by credit card.

Check for security

Its pretty rare nowadays for a website not to offer secure online ordering, but you should check the page is secured before entering any personal details. The easiest way to do it is by looking for the little padlock item at the bottom of your browser and also 'https' at the start of the text in the address bar (where you enter the address of a site). Usually only ordering pages need to be secure.

Pay by credit card

Despite what you may have heard to the contrary, online fraud is very rare. Usually credit cards offer you complete protection should your details ever be used for a fraudulent transaction.

What to do if it goes wrong.

Firstly, dont panic! Contact the retailer as there may be a perfectly reasonable answer to your problem. You may also want to contact the DTI, just to check your rights as a consumer. If you suspect criminal activity, let your card issuer know straight away so that they can hault the card and investigate the matter.
